Wellington Airport is the capital's compact, famously breezy gateway โ a single terminal at Rongotai, just about 8 km from the CBD, handling around 6 million travellers a year. Short runway, big harbour views, and a quick run into town. Here's everything you actually need to know.

Getting to & from the airport โ the local way
WLG is small and close to town, so your options are simple โ it mostly comes down to luggage, group size and the weather.
Private transfer & shuttle
Door-to-door, driver watching your flight, and no standing at a bus stop in the Wellington wind with your bags. Best if you're landing late, travelling as a group, heading out to the Hutt Valley or Kapiti Coast, or connecting to the Interislander ferry. Fixed fares from NZ$55, no surge.
Airport Express bus
The Airport Express (route 91) runs into the CBD and railway station in about 20 minutes. Cheap and frequent for solo travellers with light luggage โ less appealing with a family, bags, or in bad weather.
Taxi & rideshare
Ranks and rideshare zones sit right outside the terminal. Fine for a quick CBD hop, but metered and surge-priced, so it can cost more than a fixed transfer with none of the flight tracking.
Wellington's wind is the thing to plan around, not the drive. Southerlies can delay or divert flights, and arrivals bunch up when the weather clears โ a monitored transfer just waits for your actual landing at no extra charge, which a meter won't.
Know where you're headed? Lock in a fixed fare in under a minute โ flight monitored, no surge.

One terminal โ domestic & international together
Wellington runs a single compact terminal with domestic and international under one roof, so there's no inter-terminal hop to worry about โ check-in, security and gates are all a short walk apart.
Getting around inside
The terminal is easy to navigate on foot; the main concourse links domestic and international with cafรฉs, shops and the "Rock" architecture the airport is known for.
Because everything is close together, connections here are quick โ but international-to-domestic still means clearing customs and re-checking bags, so allow around 60 minutes. For arrivals, a kerbside meet-and-greet gets you moving fast even at peak times.

Parking at Wellington Airport
WLG has parking close to the terminal for every trip length. As a rough guide:
- Express / short-stay โ right by the terminal, best for pick-ups and drop-offs.
- Long-stay โ cheaper daily rates a short walk or shuttle from the terminal.
- Pre-book online โ cheaper booked ahead, and space is tighter here than at bigger airports.
For a few days away or two-plus travellers, a return transfer often beats parking plus fuel โ and you're not leaving the car exposed to the coastal weather.

Insider tips from our drivers
The stuff you only learn from doing the run thousands of times.
Southerly fronts can delay or divert Wellington flights. We monitor your inbound flight and adjust โ if it diverts to Palmerston North or Christchurch, talk to us and we'll help sort the onward leg.
A pre-arranged kerbside meet-and-greet beats the busy pick-up area. Your driver tracks the flight and is there when you clear the doors.
Catching the Interislander to the South Island? We time the transfer to your sailing and handle the luggage โ a calm start to the crossing.
Wellington is Middle-earth country. Ask about a Weta Workshop or film-locations stop on the way in โ our drivers know the spots.
