Cairns Airport (CNS) sits just north of the city, about 7 km — 10 to 15 minutes — from the Esplanade, and it's the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and Port Douglas. Two terminals sit a short walk apart, and arrivals are quick. Here's everything you need, from the people who drive it every day.

Getting to & from the airport — the local way

Cairns is small and close to the city, but there's no train — so how you leave still matters, especially if you're heading up the coast. The honest rundown:

Private transfer & shuttle

Door-to-door, no stairs with your bags, and a driver watching your flight so a delay doesn't cost you the ride. Best for the Northern Beaches, Palm Cove or Port Douglas, landing late, travelling as a group, or with reef and dive gear. Our fixed fares start from $39 and never surge.

Shuttle bus

Shared shuttles connect the airport with Cairns city, the Northern Beaches and Port Douglas. Good value if the timetable suits — less flexible than a private car with dive bags and a group.

Taxi & rideshare

A taxi rank and rideshare pickup sit at the terminals. Fine for a quick trip into the city, but meters and surge pricing make the longer runs to Palm Cove or Port Douglas add up — with no flight tracking.

Driver's tip

Lots of visitors head straight from the plane to a reef boat or up to Port Douglas. A pre-booked meet-and-greet with your flight tracked is the calmest way to make an early reef departure or a long transfer north.

The two terminals

Cairns runs two terminals, close together:

  • T1 — International, for overseas arrivals and departures.
  • T2 — Domestic, for Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar and regional flights.

The two are only a short walk apart — a few hundred metres along a covered path — so even a domestic-to-international connection is easy. It's a compact, relaxed airport, and bags come out quickly.

Driver's tip

Because it's so compact, you can be in the car within minutes of landing. We track your flight and time our arrival to when you'll actually reach the kerb — handy if you're rushing to a reef boat.

Transfer times & fixed fares from CNS

Approximate driving times and our fixed one-way fares to the places travellers ask for most. No meter, no surge — the price you're quoted is the price you pay.

Parking at Cairns Airport

Parking sits right by the terminals, for every trip length. As a rough guide:

  • Short-term / premium — closest to the terminals, best for quick pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Long-term / value — cheaper daily rates a short walk or shuttle from the terminal.
  • Pre-book online — almost always cheaper booked ahead than driving up.
Do the maths

If you're island- or reef-hopping for a few days, a return transfer often beats leaving the car parked in the tropical heat — and you skip the drive back after a big day on the water.

Insider tips from our drivers

The stuff you only learn from doing the run every day.

Gateway to the reef

Many visitors go straight from the terminal to a reef boat at the Marlin Marina or up to Port Douglas. Book a transfer with your flight tracked so an early departure isn't stressful.

Two terminals, short walk

International (T1) and Domestic (T2) are only a few hundred metres apart — connections are easy, and you're through quickly either way.

Mind the wet season

Tropical afternoon storms are common from November to April. Flights can bunch up when they clear — a monitored transfer simply waits at no extra charge.

Room for the gear

Dive bags, snorkel gear, eskies and prams are all fine — just tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with the space.
