Getting to & from the airport — the local way
CHC is close to the city and well-signed, so it's an easy one — the choice mostly comes down to where in the South Island you're headed.
Private transfer & shuttle
Door-to-door, driver watching your flight, and room for skis, boards and a boot full of bags. Best if you're heading to the ski fields, out to Akaroa, down to Tekapo, or landing late — and it's the calm option for families and groups. Fixed fares from NZ$59, no surge.
Metro public bus
The Metro bus (route 29) runs into the city centre in about 30 minutes. Cheap for solo travellers with light luggage — less practical with ski gear, a family, or on an alpine schedule.
Taxi & rideshare
Ranks and rideshare zones sit outside the terminal. Fine for a CBD hop, but metered and surge-priced — a longer run to the mountains or Akaroa adds up fast, with no flight tracking.
If you're headed to the ski fields, the drive matters more than the airport. Roads to Mt Hutt and the club fields can need chains or 4WD in winter — our drivers run them all season with the right vehicles, so you arrive safely instead of white-knuckling a rental in the snow.

Christchurch runs a single integrated terminal, with the domestic and international areas under one roof and a short walk apart — no separate buildings, no inter-terminal bus.
Getting around inside
Arrivals, check-in and gates are all within the one terminal, with cafés, shops and rental desks on the ground floor. It's one of New Zealand's easiest airports to move through.
Even with everything under one roof, allow around 60 minutes for an international-to-domestic connection to clear customs, collect and re-check bags. For arrivals, a kerbside meet-and-greet is the quickest way out — especially with ski gear.

Parking at Christchurch Airport
CHC has parking close to the terminal for every trip length. As a rough guide:
- Express / valet — closest to the doors, best for drop-offs and short stays.
- Short & long-stay — cheaper daily rates a short walk or shuttle from the terminal.
- Pre-book online — almost always cheaper booked ahead than on the day.
For a ski week or a longer South Island loop, a return transfer often beats parking plus fuel — and you're not leaving the car in a frosty lot or driving tired after a flight.
