Auckland Airport is New Zealand's front door โ the country's busiest, handling around 20 million travellers a year from its terminals at Māngere, about 21 km south of the city centre. Whether you're connecting through or starting a North Island trip, here's everything you actually need to know.

Getting to & from the airport โ the local way
AKL gives you a handful of ways into the city and beyond, and the right one depends on where you're going, your luggage, and the traffic. The honest rundown:
Private transfer & shuttle
Door-to-door, no wrangling bags on and off buses, and a driver watching your flight so a delay doesn't cost you the ride. Best if you're heading to the North Shore, out to wine country, or up to Hamilton or the Coromandel โ landing late, travelling as a group, or simply wanting it handled. Fixed fares from NZ$89, and they never surge.
AirportLink & public bus
The AirportLink bus connects to the rail network and the frequent city bus runs into the CBD in roughly 45โ60 minutes depending on traffic. Cheap for solo travellers with light luggage โ less appealing at odd hours, in the rain, or with a family and a pile of bags.
Taxi & rideshare
Ranks and rideshare zones sit outside both terminals. Fine for a quick trip, but fares run on meters and surge pricing, so a peak-hour or late-night run into the city can cost well over a fixed transfer โ with none of the flight tracking.
Auckland's motorway traffic is the real variable, not the distance. The SH20/SH1 run can be 30 minutes off-peak and closer to an hour in weekday peaks. We build that into your pickup time so an early flight never becomes a sprint โ and because your fare is fixed, traffic never changes the price.
Know where you're headed? Lock in a fixed fare in under a minute โ flight monitored, no surge.

The two terminals & getting between them
Auckland runs an International Terminal and a Domestic Terminal, about 1 km apart โ close, but not something you'd want to walk with heavy bags in a hurry.
Covered walkway
A sheltered, well-signed walkway links the two in around 10 minutes on foot โ just follow the green line painted on the ground.
Free terminal transfer bus
A free shuttle loops between the terminals every 10โ15 minutes if you'd rather not walk โ handy with luggage or kids.
Allow 60โ90 minutes between an international arrival and a domestic departure once you factor in immigration, baggage and the terminal hop. Auckland is mid-way through building a new integrated terminal, so signage and walking routes can change โ a pre-booked driver who knows the current layout takes the guesswork out of it.

Parking at Auckland Airport
AKL has parking for every trip length, from quick pick-ups to a fortnight away. As a rough guide:
- Valet & premium โ closest to the terminals, best for drop-offs and short stays.
- Park&Ride / long-stay โ cheaper daily rates with a free shuttle to the terminal; the value option for longer trips.
- Pre-book online โ almost always cheaper booked ahead than driving up on the day.
For anything longer than about three days โ or two-plus travellers โ a return transfer often beats parking fees plus fuel and the shuttle from a distant lot with your bags.

Insider tips from our drivers
The stuff you only learn from doing the run thousands of times.
The SH20/SH1 run bunches up 7โ9am and 4โ6:30pm. On an early or evening flight we'll pick you up ahead of what the apps suggest so the motorway doesn't cost you the gate.
On arrival, a pre-arranged kerbside meet-and-greet beats circling the pick-up loop. Your driver tracks the flight and is there when you clear the doors โ early or late.
International long-haul departures cluster in the evening and red-eye arrivals in the early morning โ we run 24/7, so a 5am landing is no problem.
Ask about a scenic route or a stop. Our drivers know the ferry timings and the west-coast beaches, and can build the day around your flight.
