Darwin Airport (DRW) sits about 13 km from the city — a quick 15-minute drive — and is your gateway to the Top End, from Kakadu and Litchfield to the tropical harbour and markets. Domestic and international flights share one combined terminal, and arrivals are relaxed and quick. Here's everything, from the people who drive it every day.

Getting to & from the airport — the local way

Darwin is close to the city but there's no train, so here's the honest rundown:

Private transfer & shuttle

Door-to-door, no stairs with your bags, and a driver watching your flight so a delay doesn't cost you the ride. Best for the Waterfront, the suburbs, Palmerston or a Top End tour, landing late (many flights arrive at odd hours), or with luggage. Our fixed fares start from $45 and never surge.

Shuttle bus

An airport shuttle connects the terminal with Darwin's city hotels. Good value for solo travellers — less flexible with a group or an early tour departure.

Taxi & rideshare

A rank and rideshare pickup sit at the terminal. Fine for a quick city trip, but meters and surge pricing add up — and there's no flight tracking, which matters with Darwin's many late-night arrivals.

Driver's tip

A lot of Darwin flights land late at night. A pre-booked meet-and-greet with your flight tracked means a driver is there whatever the hour — far better than joining a long taxi queue at 1am.

The terminal

Darwin runs a single combined terminal handling both domestic and international flights under one roof — there's no separate international building and no inter-terminal transfer. It shares its airfield with RAAF Base Darwin, but for passengers it's one straightforward terminal, and bags come out quickly.

Because it's compact and close to the road, you can be in the car within minutes of landing.

Driver's tip

The Northern Territory runs on Central time (half an hour behind the eastern states) and doesn't do daylight saving — worth double-checking your pickup time against your phone if you've flown in from the east coast in summer.

Transfer times & fixed fares from DRW

Approximate driving times and our fixed one-way fares to the places travellers ask for most. No meter, no surge — the price you're quoted is the price you pay.

Parking at Darwin Airport

Parking sits right by the terminal, for every trip length. As a rough guide:

  • Short-term / premium — closest to the terminal, best for quick pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Long-term / value — cheaper daily rates a short walk or shuttle from the terminal.
  • Pre-book online — almost always cheaper booked ahead than driving up.
Do the maths

If you're off touring the Top End for a few days, a return transfer beats leaving the car baking in the tropical heat — and you skip the late-night drive home after a long day out.

Insider tips from our drivers

The stuff you only learn from doing the run every day.

Late-night landings

Many Darwin flights arrive after midnight. A pre-booked transfer with flight tracking means a driver is waiting, no matter the hour — a real relief in the tropics.

Mind the wet season

The build-up and wet season (roughly October to April) bring humidity and afternoon storms. A monitored transfer just waits if a storm delays your flight.

Gateway to Kakadu & Litchfield

Darwin is the launch point for the Top End's national parks. Through Cooee Tours we can pair your transfer with a Litchfield or Kakadu day.

Check the clock

The NT is on Central time and skips daylight saving — an easy half-hour to get caught out on if you've come from the east coast.

Darwin Airport questions, answered

How far is Darwin Airport from the city?
About 13 km — roughly a 15-minute drive to the CBD and Waterfront. A fixed-fare transfer starts from $45.
Is Darwin Airport one terminal?
Yes. Domestic and international flights share one combined terminal, so there's no separate building or inter-terminal transfer.
Do you do late-night airport pickups in Darwin?
Yes — we operate 24/7 with flight tracking, which suits Darwin's many after-midnight arrivals. Your driver is there whenever you land.
Can you transfer to Kakadu or Litchfield?
Yes — Litchfield is about 90 minutes and Kakadu around 3 hours. We run Top End transfers and, through Cooee Tours, full-day tours.
What time zone is Darwin in?
The Northern Territory runs on Central Standard Time (half an hour behind the eastern states) and doesn't observe daylight saving — worth checking against your pickup time.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight in real time and adjust the pickup automatically at no extra charge, so your driver is waiting whenever you actually land.
