Queenstown Airport is the adventure capital's gateway β€” a single terminal at Frankton with one of the most spectacular approaches anywhere, about 8 km from the town centre. It's the launch pad for the ski fields, Wanaka, Fiordland and Milford Sound. Here's everything you actually need to know.

Getting to & from the airport β€” the local way

ZQN is small and close to town, but it's also one of NZ's busiest single-runway airports and taxis get scarce in peak and ski season β€” so planning your ride ahead matters here more than most places.

Private transfer & shuttle

Door-to-door, driver watching your flight, and room for skis, boards and every bag. Best if you're heading up to the ski fields, over to Wanaka, out to Glenorchy, or on to Fiordland β€” and it's the reliable option when the town is full and taxis vanish. Fixed fares from NZ$59, no surge.

Orbus public bus

The Orbus service runs from the airport into Queenstown and Frankton for a couple of dollars, roughly every 15–30 minutes. Great value for solo travellers with light luggage β€” less practical with ski gear, a group, or on an early lift schedule.

Taxi & rideshare

There's a rank outside the terminal, but Queenstown taxis and rideshare are in high demand β€” in peak and ski season the wait can be long and prices climb. A pre-booked transfer is waiting the moment you land.

Driver's tip

Queenstown's weather and curfew are the things to plan around. Flights can be delayed or diverted to Invercargill or Dunedin when cloud is low, and there are no scheduled night flights. We monitor your flight and, if it diverts, we'll help sort the onward drive β€” a couple of hours by road.

One terminal β€” domestic & international together

Queenstown runs a single terminal handling both domestic and international (mostly trans-Tasman) flights, so there's no inter-terminal hop β€” but it's compact and gets busy, especially in ski season.

Getting around inside

Check-in, security and gates are all a short walk apart, with cafΓ©s and rental desks on hand. Because the airport is small and popular, allow a little extra time at peak departures.

Driver's tip

There's an airport curfew, so the last flights leave in the evening and the first arrive after dawn β€” arrivals bunch up. A pre-booked meet-and-greet means you're not competing for a scarce taxi with a whole flight of skiers.

Transfer times & fixed fares from ZQN

Approximate driving times and our fixed one-way fares to the places travellers ask for most. No meter, no surge β€” the price you're quoted is the price you pay. All fares in NZD.

Parking at Queenstown Airport

ZQN has parking by the terminal, but it's limited and popular β€” pre-booking is wise, especially in ski season. As a rough guide:

  • Short-term β€” right by the terminal, best for quick pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Long-term β€” a short walk or shuttle away, cheaper by the day.
  • Pre-book online β€” strongly recommended here; spaces fill fast in winter.
Do the maths

For a ski trip or a Southern Lakes loop, a return transfer usually beats scarce, pricey parking plus a rental β€” and you skip driving unfamiliar alpine roads tired after a flight.

Insider tips from our drivers

The stuff you only learn from doing the run thousands of times.

Book ahead in ski season

June–September, Queenstown fills and taxis get scarce. A pre-booked transfer is the difference between rolling straight to your lodge and queuing in the cold with your board.

Weather & diversions

Low cloud can divert Queenstown flights to Invercargill or Dunedin. We track your flight and, if it diverts, we'll help arrange the onward road transfer β€” around two hours.

The Crown Range to Wanaka

The drive to Wanaka over the Crown Range is New Zealand's highest sealed road and one of its most scenic. Ask us about the route β€” stunning in summer, snow-chained in winter.

Gateway to Milford

Milford Sound is a big day from Queenstown. We can run the transfer to Te Anau or the whole trip, timed around your cruise β€” no rushed 12-hour self-drive.

More than a ride

Make the trip part of the holiday

We're the ground-transport arm of Cooee Tours, showing people this country for 30 years. Turn your Queenstown run into a Wanaka wine day, a Glenorchy scenic drive, or the first leg of a Milford Sound trip. Same trusted drivers, one easy booking.

The airport is about 8 km from central Queenstown at Frankton, roughly a 15-minute drive. A fixed-fare transfer into town starts from NZ$59.
Can I get an airport shuttle at any hour?
We operate 24/7, though Queenstown Airport has a curfew so there are no scheduled night flights. A driver is scheduled and monitoring your flight for the first arrivals and last departures.
