Why the BNE–Gold Coast route matters
Brisbane Airport is the primary international gateway for Gold Coast visitors. Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta handles direct flights from Australia and select Asian routes, but the majority of international visitors — particularly those arriving from the UK, Europe, North America, and the Middle East — land at Brisbane and then need to travel south to their Gold Coast destination.
The route varies from approximately 80 km (Brisbane Airport to Surfers Paradise) to 110 km (Brisbane Airport to Coolangatta/Tweed Heads). Journey time by road is 55 minutes to 90 minutes depending on traffic, destination, and the time of day.
- Distance: ~80 km to Surfers Paradise · ~95 km to Broadbeach · ~110 km to Coolangatta
- Road: M1 Pacific Motorway (no tolls on this section after Gateway Motorway exit)
- Peak traffic: Southbound Friday afternoon, northbound Sunday afternoon — allow extra time
- Alternative: Gold Coast Airport (OOL) for passengers who can fly direct to Coolangatta

Private transfer — the most practical option
A private transfer from Brisbane Airport to Surfers Paradise starts from $149 in 2026, covering the whole vehicle. That's door-to-door in 55–75 minutes with all luggage loaded, no connections, and a driver who knows the M1 and the Gold Coast hotel precinct layout.
For a family of four, that $149 works out to $37.25 per person — which is competitive with the Airtrain fare-per-person (approximately $35–$45) once you add in the additional tram fare at the Gold Coast end and the fact that the tram doesn't reach most hotel areas directly. For groups of five or more in a van, the per-person cost falls further.
The Gold Coast specifically benefits from private transfers more than some other destinations because the resort strip is long and spread out. Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, and Coolangatta are all different locations on a 40 km coastal stretch. The Airtrain and tram can reach some of these but not all — and not with checked luggage at any reasonable pace.
The BNE–Gold Coast route is one of our busiest. During school holidays and major Gold Coast events (Schoolies, Magic Millions, Ironman), vehicle availability gets tight. Book your arrival and return transfers at the same time to lock in pricing and guarantee availability.
Airtrain + Gold Coast Light Rail
The most transit-friendly option for budget travellers. The Airtrain from Brisbane Airport runs south on the Beenleigh line, connecting to the Gold Coast via a rail interchange at Helensvale (for the G:link light rail) or continuing to Gold Coast stations including Nerang, Robina, and Varsity Lakes on the heavy rail network.
A single adult fare from Brisbane Airport to Robina is approximately $35–$42 in 2026. From Robina, you'll need the G:link tram to reach the beach strip — an additional fare. Total transit cost for a solo adult to reach Surfers Paradise is approximately $40–$48.
The journey takes 80–100 minutes minimum, longer with platform waits. With suitcases, the experience is challenging: stairs at some platforms, crowded trains during peak, and a tram ride with luggage at the end. For a solo business traveller with a carry-on heading to Surfers, it's manageable. For a family with four suitcases, it's genuinely difficult.
Last Airtrain services are approximately 10pm from Brisbane Airport. International flights that land after 9pm leave you without a train option. For late arrivals at Brisbane Airport bound for the Gold Coast, a private transfer is your only practical option besides taxis or rideshare.
Shared shuttles — Con-X-ion and others
Con-X-ion operates the main shared shuttle service between Brisbane Airport and the Gold Coast, with per-person fares of approximately $35–$55 depending on your specific Gold Coast destination. The shuttle departs from a designated area at the terminal and makes multiple stops along the Gold Coast highway strip.
Journey time is genuinely variable — 90 minutes in good conditions, up to 150 minutes if you're the last drop-off and others ahead of you are at different ends of the strip. The shuttle waits for a critical mass of passengers before departing, which adds an unpredictable pre-departure delay. For a solo budget traveller with no time pressure arriving midday, it works. For families, for tight schedules, or for arrivals after 8pm, it's not the right call.
Rideshare — surge is real on this route
Rideshare from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast is attractive in theory — familiar app, door-to-door, no booking required. In practice, the 80 km distance combined with Brisbane Airport's pickup logistics creates some of the worst rideshare economics in Queensland. Off-peak fares to Surfers Paradise might come in at $100–$130. During peak hour, post-event, or after a busy inbound flight bank, surge multipliers can push the same trip to $180–$200 or more.
There is no price certainty with rideshare over this distance, which is why we don't recommend it as the default Gold Coast option. A private transfer at $149 fixed is often cheaper than a peak rideshare and always more predictable.

Hire car — when it makes sense
Hiring a car at Brisbane Airport makes sense specifically when you plan to drive yourself around the Gold Coast during your stay — exploring the hinterland, driving between beach towns, or making day trips to Byron Bay or the Scenic Rim. Car hire from Brisbane Airport starts at approximately $60–$80/day for a small car in 2026.
It does not make sense if you plan to park at the hotel and use taxis or rideshare for local trips — the combination of hire car cost plus parking fees (Gold Coast hotel parking ranges from $20–$50 per night) quickly exceeds the cost of a private transfer each way. For pure airport-to-hotel-to-airport trips, hire cars are rarely the most economical choice.
For most Gold Coast visitors flying into Brisbane, a pre-booked private transfer is the clearest choice — direct, predictable, and competitively priced once you're travelling as a couple or family. The Airtrain works for solo budget travellers who travel light and have time to spare.
Practical tips for the Brisbane–Gold Coast route
Friday afternoon southbound is the worst
The M1 southbound on Friday afternoon between approximately 3pm and 7pm is the most congested section of the Brisbane–Gold Coast route. If your flight lands Friday afternoon and you're heading south, add at least 30 minutes to any estimated journey time. Private transfer drivers know the M1 traffic patterns and route accordingly — but there are no magic shortcuts when the motorway is backed up.
Know which end of the Gold Coast you're going to
Many visitors book transfers thinking "Gold Coast" without specifying whether they're going to Surfers Paradise (central), Broadbeach (casino end), Burleigh Heads (boutique end), or Coolangatta (airport end). These are 40 km apart and all have very different feels. Know your hotel's suburb before you book your transport.
Consider flying directly into Gold Coast Airport
If your airline route allows it, flying into Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta instead of Brisbane can eliminate this entire journey. OOL has direct domestic services from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and several other Australian cities, plus direct international services from select Asian and Pacific destinations. If you're headed to the southern half of the Gold Coast, OOL is significantly closer. See our Gold Coast Airport transfer page for more.
